Jacksonville International Airport (IATA: JAX, ICAO: KJAX, FAA LID: JAX) is by far the sixth largest airport in Florida and one of the busiest in the region as of 2017. JAX is a civil-military public airport 13 miles north of Downtown Jacksonville, in Duval County, Florida.

Before the pandemic crippled the airline industry, the airport handled 7 million passengers. Its busiest domestic routes include Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, Baltimore, Maryland, Nashville, Tennessee, Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, Houston–Intercontinental, Texas, New York–JFK, New York, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Newark, New Jersey.

Jacksonville International Airport is at 2400 Yankee Clipper Drive, Jacksonville, Florida. Owned and operated by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, the airport covers 7,911 acres and has two concrete runways: 3,048 x 46 m and 2,347 x 46 m. The airport sits 9 meters above sea level at 30° 29′ 39″ N and 81° 41′ 16″ W. It mainly serves the Greater Jacksonville metropolitan area's nearly 900,000 residents.

JAX has a two-level main passenger terminal building with an area of 504,000 square meters. Airline departures are located at the upper level of the terminal building, while the Lower Level is for arrivals. It has two concourses: A and B, with ten boarding gates each.

History of Jacksonville International Airport

In 1928, JAX was known as the Jacksonville Municipal Airport. During WWII, it was controlled by the United States Army Air Forces. After the war, it was renamed Jacksonville – Thomas Cole Imeson Municipal Airport until 1968.

Construction of the modern Jacksonville International Airport began in 1965 in another location. It was dedicated three years later. In 1968, airport operations from Imeson Airport transferred to the Jacksonville International Airport.

From then on, JAX has been serving up to 2 million passengers per year until 1982. In 1999, the airport served 5 million passengers. After the expansion project in the 2000s, ridership grew to 6.3 million in 2007. In 2019, JAX is the sixth busiest airport in Florida handling 7.1 million passengers annually.

Today, JAX is home to Allegiant Air, American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, and United Express. Cargo carriers FedEx Express and UPS Airlines also operate here.

Trains at Jacksonville International Airport

The Amtrak Station is located in downtown Jacksonville. From JAX, passengers can take the JTA Line 4 Bus and get to the JRTC Bay H in about 90 minutes. From JRTC Bay H, they can take another 30-minute trip via JTA Line 1 Bus to Amtrak Train Station. Public buses are located near the Baggage Claim area.
